Ice skating in the Rain

Braved the early morning hours and rain to try out ice-skating for the 1st time. The five of us girls sacrificed Sat morning sleep and home warmth to check out Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland last weekend.

As we were joking about the fear of slipping on the ice whilst changing into our rental ice skates, I became the very first victim to fall after only taking 3 steps on the ice rink. Must have shocked the ice marshals at work since I was gleefully laughing as I laid there on the cold floor.

Anyway, skating was not too difficult to pick up after observing the people around me. Our 10am session consisted of a good mix of people – half were total beginners from the way they hung on the side railings and being wobbly in their footings, while the rest were experts at speeding across the rink with spins and tricks thrown in.

Going forward for me was fine, keeping myself stable during the turns and avoiding other skaters were the tricky bits. The moment my concentration lapsed or I tried some new moves, I ended up falling hard on the rink. Probably took more than 5 falls altogether – had some minor bruises on both knees and right elbow for souvenirs.

Definitely a fun activity to enjoy during these winter months. Would have enjoyed it more, had it not been drizzling the whole hour during our skating session. Nevertheless, the damp and cold was slightly eased away when we treated ourselves to some German hotdogs as brunch after our tiring affair. Yum!

Looking forward to Christmas now when I get the chance to cook up a storm for friends!
